We've carved out a few interesting projects at Factual that we're looking for (paid!) intern engineers to work on. The projects vary from ~2 to 6 weeks worth of work and we would want you to be able to spend 10-20 hours a week on this. The skills we're looking for are described below. The actual positions are:

Logistics:
Factual is located in Los Angeles, CA, but we're expecting that this position will be remote. If you're in the LA area that would be great too.
We will assign a full-time Factual engineer for you to work with and track deliverables against. This will be a paid position based on completing a project.

Factual, Inc. is looking for an Intern Data Extraction Engineer to work with our team of Linguists and Engineers to find and upload structured data to our open data platform. Your work may include research and analysis of data on the web; extracting data using proprietary tools; aggregating, cleaning, and merging data; and evaluating algorithmically generated data extractors.
The job will entail generating, maintaining, and operating the extraction software and scripts, as well as authoring CSS and XPATH selectors
Skills desired:
- Linux shell scripting, one-liners with perl/ruby, and/or awk and sed
- Familiarity with bash, including grep, sort, find, xargs, split, join, comm, input and output redirection, shell escaping, defining aliases and functions would be of help
- Ability to author regular expressions
- Familiarity with DOM, esp. authoring and fine-tuning CSS and XPATH selectors which work across multiple pages

Factual, Inc. is looking for an Intern iPhone Engineer to work with our team of Engineers to develop a wrapper for Factual's API in Objective C. Your work may include research and analysis of iPhone development best practices; learning Factual's API; creating basic documentation, and developing the API wrappers and interfaces. We are interested in building our own iPhone applications using the API wrapper, and that can be incorporated into your internship.
Skills desired:
- Understanding of Cocoa/Objective C
- Understanding of JSON
- Familiarity with object relational models
- Ability to produce clean, well-documented code
You are likely to excel at this job if you:
- Can easily figure out how to use an API from documentation and simple examples
- Like to produce clean, organized solutions
Factual, Inc. is looking for an Intern API Wrapper Engineers to work with our team of Engineers to develop wrappers for Factual's API in Java, C#, Python, and PHP. Your work may include research and analysis of the target language's best practices; learning Factual's API; creating basic documentation, and developing the API wrappers and interfaces.
Skills desired:
- Understanding of Java, C#, Python, or PHP
- Understanding of JSON
- Familiarity with object relational models
- Ability to produce clean, well-documented code
You are likely to excel at this job if you:
- Can easily figure out how to use an API from documentation and simple examples
